Welcome to Funky About Food, Nutrition Therapy! I’m Lynn Penrose, RD, here to help you dissolve your food funk!

Today, I’m talking about a solution for the funk factor of Food Emotion Commotion, which is eating, or not eating due to uncomfortable, yucky emotions!

Let’s start with the question: How do you know when to stop eating? I was just teaching a class on this very topic, and here are some answers I got:
-“I stop eating when it hurts!”
-“I stop eating because it’s all gone!”
-“But if it tastes really good, I can’t stop!”
And here is a good one-
“If I get too full, that is when I decide to keep on eating!”

This is obviously a topic that needs a solution, and fast! How do you decide to stop eating?

Here is the dealio: Deciding when to stop eating is a very personal decision, so begin to ask yourself, how do I want to feel after this meal?

Download the free hunger/fullness scale, to get an idea of how you want to feel after a meal. You will gradually learn how to respond (key word is responding) to fullness levels.

By doing this…
-your natural weight may emerge
-relying on your fullness cues, while you are eating, will help you determine when to stop eating so you no longer have to feel uncomfortably full after eating.

Welcome to Funky About Food, Nutrition Therapy! I’m Lynn Penrose, RD, here to help you dissolve your food funk!

Today, I’m going to talk about exactly what is getting in the way of being normal with food because deep down, we all know, it’s not about the food. So, if you find yourself compulsively under or overeating and just can’t seem to stop, if it’s not about the food, then what is it all about?

Today, I want to talk about what is getting in the way of a balanced relationship with food.

It’s the underlying belief of not having enough. Either you are not enough, there is not enough love, not enough safety or attention, not enough of whatever is most important to you in this world.

This belief goes for the over and under eater, the under eater expresses this belief by depriving themselves before anyone or anything can deprive them of their needs, and the overeater expresses this belief through “storing up” before it “all runs out.”

So, the solution is all about taking contrary action. For the under eater, it’s about eating food when you really don’t want to, and for the overeater, it’s about not eating, even when you really, really want to. It’s sitting is this discomfort you begin to discover that there is enough of everything you need!

Welcome to Funky About Food, Nutrition Therapy! I’m Lynn Penrose, RD, here to help you dissolve your food funk!

Today, I’m talking about a solution for the funk factor, Food Emotion Commotion, which is eating, or not eating in a way so you don’t have to feel uncomfortable emotions.

So, let me ask you a question, what are the benefits of emotional eating? You may say there are no benefits of emotional eating, that you hate doing it and feel awful after you do it, however, you never engage in any behavior that doesn’t help you in some way!

I asked some people what they get out of emotional eating, and this is what they said…
“I can get rid of a lot of anger just by eating peanut M&M’s!”
“I eat to distract myself, for example, I come home from a long day at work, I make a big bowl of pasta or popcorn, anything to distract me from reality!”
“My almond butter does soothe me!”

These are great reasons why we engage in the behavior and this is exactly why it is so hard to stop! Going at your funky food behavior from this angle, understanding how it’s helping you, is the first step towards dissolving it!

So, I have to ask, how does your emotional eating help you?

Stay tuned for more free nutrition therapy, so together we can dissolve your food funk!

Welcome to Funky About Food, Nutrition Therapy! I’m Lynn Penrose, RD, here to help you dissolve your food funk!

Today, I’m talking about funky food factor, Food Fixation, which is when you are preoccupied with food, and you have food rules, like “good” and “bad” foods swimming around in your head.

Hot off the newsstand this week is US magazine telling us, yet again, that diets work. This is pure propaganda, because diets don’t work and I’m going to tell you why!

Diets, also known as food rules, lead to inevitable cravings and unmet cravings lead to overeating and we all know that overeating leads to feeling really crappy!

Here is the dealio, diets (a.k.a. food rules) actually put you in “food jail”, because when you break a rule, you end up imprisoning yourself with even more destructive food behaviors!

So, this is what I would like you to do, just start thinking about your food rules, i.e. like no carbs, no sugar, and think about how they could be setting you up for a fall. Taking a look at your rules will put you on the road towards trusting yourself more with food, as the ultimate goal is peace of mind before, during and after you eat.
